Castro Statement on 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s Handover from the United Kingdom to China

San Antonio, TX – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement:
 
“Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China. As part of the handover, the People’s Republic of China committed to the people of Hong Kong  political, judicial, and economic autonomy under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy. This commitment underlined the distinct cultural and political history of the people of Hong Kong, including freedom of expression, the rule of law, and an independent judiciary. These principles underpin Hong Kong’s continued success and its economic dynamism.”
