Castro Releases Podcast Episode on U.S. Foreign Policy in Disarray

Eighth Episode of “Diplomatic Cable” Features Council on Foreign Relations President Richard Haass

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and First Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, today released a Diplomatic Cable episode on U.S. foreign policy in disarray under President Trump featuring Council on Foreign Relations President Dr. Richard Haass:

“From China’s rising global influence in the South China Sea and through the One Belt One Road initiative, the United States’ ‘America First’ posture, dwindling prospects for NAFTA renegotiations, and the worsening global refugee crisis, United States foreign policy under the Trump Administration seems to lack strategy, direction, and engagement,” said Rep. Castro. “As American foreign policy focuses inward under President Trump, we are leaving space for others to fill our void who may not have our best interests at hand. On this episode of the Diplomatic Cable, I’m joined by Council on Foreign Relations President Dr. Richard Haass—who has served four different Administrations—where we discuss the effects of this current foreign policy posture, and how the new dynamics of world order challenge the United States and our allies across the globe.”

"My concern is that a lot of countries will come to the conclusion that they can no longer rely on [the United States] or depend on us for their security to the extent that they have and the way that they have,” Dr. Haass said on the episode. “And again that will force them to think about…the alternatives…deferring to a China or becoming more self-reliant.”

The episode is available on iTunesSpotify, and Google Play

Future episodes of the Diplomatic Cable will include discussions with International Rescue Committee (IRC) CEO and President David Miliband, Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the United States Department of State Nick Burns, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, German Marshall Fund’s Laura Rosenberger, and many other experts, practitioners, Members of Congress and American citizens. Episodes will focus on repercussions of U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the consequences of a rising China, the crisis in American diplomacy and development, election security, prospects for Middle East peace and many other issues.
