Castro Statement on Settlement Reached in Family Separation Asylum Cases
WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and First Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, today made the following statement:
“While seeking asylum is a right under international law, I welcome the agreement reached late last night to allow around 1,000 asylum seekers, who had been separated from their families at the border, another chance to seek asylum in the United States. This agreement allows parents to help with their children’s petitions for asylum and provides a pathway for some deported parents to return to the United States. While the damage of family separations will leave psychological scars for decades, this is a step in the right direction. I will continue to urge the Administration to focus their efforts on reuniting the remaining 400+ migrant children with their loved ones, while protecting the asylum rights of those impacted by the Administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy.”
