Castro Introduces Resolution Recognizing San Antonio’s 300th Birthday
Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and First Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, introduced a resolution in honor of San Antonio’s Tricentennial (H.Res.858) that celebrates the contributions the city makes to Texas, the United States and around the globe.
“In 1718, Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares established Mission San Antonio de Valero and started a small community around modern-day San Antonio River, an area first inhabited by the Payaya people. 300 years later, San Antonio has grown to become the second largest city in Texas that’s rich with culture and history. From its designation as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site, to being known as Military City USA, to the 11 sister city relationships San Antonio enjoys throughout the world, we must celebrate these achievements and honor the sacrifices of all those who made them possible. That’s why I’ve introduced this resolution recognizing 300 years since San Antonio’s founding. It is a privilege to represent my hometown in Congress and an even greater privilege to reflect on our city’s history and look forward to new possibilities.”
The measure was co-sponsored by Rep. Lamar Smith (TX-21), Rep. Will Hurd (TX-23), Rep. Lloyd Doggett (TX-35), and Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX-28).
Full text of the resolution can be found here.
