Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), founding co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on ASEAN and founding co-chair of the U.S.-Japan Caucus, released the following statement welcoming the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea:

“This week, athletes from all over the world will take part in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games marking a tradition since 1896. These games are as heated as they are historic, and they symbolize international cooperation, friendship, and sportsmanship.

“Set in South Korea, this year’s games come at a time of great tumult for the region and the world, and serve as a reminder of what’s possible with peace and diplomacy. We should cherish this opportunity to come together as peoples and nations, and appreciate the peaceful sportsmanship we’ll see that reminds us that we all share a community humanity. To Team USA, know we’ll be cheering you on from living rooms across our beloved country. To the athletes of the world, know we cherish the chance to compete with you in this historic tradition.”
