Castro Statement on Trump's Previous Attempt to Fire Mueller

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement:

"Reports that the President sought to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller is yet another incident of Trump trying to dictate the boundaries of the investigation. Congress—including Republican leadership—must investigate it, and so too should Special Counsel Mueller as obstruction of justice which could ultimately move Trump closer to impeachment.

"The House Committee's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election must continue to move forward. This includes allowing Special Counsel Mueller to continue his thorough and impartial probe without interference or obstruction by the President and immediately ending Republican attempts to discredit the investigation. It's time we begin protecting our democracy, ahead of party politics, so we can properly follow the facts and prevent future attacks on our nation's democratic system."
