Castro Statement on Russia Sanctions Announcement

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today released the following statement:

“I am glad to see the Trump Administration’s announcement of new Russia sanctions against those close to President Putin and many individuals who are also target of Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. These sanctions send a clear message to Putin that his current behavior will be met with severe consequences. I hope this round is just one of many more given the breadth and scope of Russia’s nefarious actions in the meddling of the 2016 presidential elections, the government-sanctioned poisoning of Yulia and Sergei Skripal in Britain last month, and the broader assault already underway on our upcoming midterm elections.”

Background:

Rep. Castro and Rep. Turner (OH-10) yesterday introduced the bipartisan Stand with UK Against Russia Violations Act which would sanction those responsible for the Salisbury poison attack against Yulia and Sergei Skripal and seeks to deter anyone who will commit similar attacks in the future on behalf of the Russian government. This bill also targets Russian financial institutions until Putin ceases its practice of assassinating expatriates and dissidents outside of Russia.
