Statement from Congressman Castro on Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA
SAN ANTONIO – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement after U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a preliminary ruling to suspend the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, a drug used for medication abortion:
“Over the last two decades, mifepristone has been used safely and effectively by millions of Americans. Today’s ruling is an outrageous act of judicial overreach that ignores years of scientific research in favor of bad-faith arguments by right-wing extremists who seek to control the most personal aspect of American lives. At a time when maternal deaths are surging, this ruling has the potential to further reduce access to safe abortion and force Americans to carry dangerous and non-viable pregnancies against medical advice. I strongly urge President Biden to immediately mobilize the full force of his executive power to protect access to abortion nationwide and facilitate access for people in Texas and other states where Republicans have criminalized abortion. This unprecedented decision by a Trump-appointed judge must not stand.”
