Congressman Castro Statement on North American Leaders Summit

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro (TX-20), senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on President Biden’s North American Leaders Summit (NALS) with Mexican President López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau:

"From ending the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerating the global economic recovery to combating the climate crisis and building a fair migration system, Canada and Mexico are critical partners and great friends of the United States. Our nation's economies are intertwined through North American supply chains and our people's destinies are interconnected through unbreakable family bonds. In my home state of Texas, border communities are celebrating the return of business after the Biden-Harris administration lifted the restriction on non-essential travel."

"I welcome increased North American cooperation led by President Biden and hope this summit will be a launching point for significant progress. This week, I asked Assistant Secretary Brian Nichols about U.S. efforts to ensure respect for the human rights of asylum seekers, crack down on illegal firearm trafficking, and support the rule of law and democracy in the Western Hemisphere. I have also pushed for the Build Back Better Act to include work permits and deportation protection for immigrants as the lead author of the Citizenship for Essential Workers Act."

"As demonstrated during this crisis, essential workers and their families are the backbone of North America's economies. I look forward to working together with the Biden-Harris administration, Canada, and Mexico to advance an ambitious agenda to improve the lives of all our peoples."
