Congressman Castro Statement on 2020 Census Data, Latinos Powering U.S. Population Growth

SAN ANTONIO — U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro (TX-20) issued the following statement on the release of 2020 Census data:

“The 2020 Census confirms that Latinos are powering population growth in America. Latinos accounted for about half of the U.S. population growth over the past decade, and now make up nearly one in five Americans. More than 62 million Latinos were counted, up from 50 million in 2010. Younger immigrants are bolstering the U.S. population and boosting the American economy, helping to support an older workforce and prevent a decline in population”.

“In Texas, Hispanics and Whites are equal shares of the population, each about 40-percent. Three of the nation’s top 10 biggest cities are in Texas, including my hometown of San Antonio, which continues to grow strong. Texas is the fourth most diverse state in the country. This data will inform how political maps are drawn during redistricting, and we need a transparent process to ensure these growing communities are fully reflected.”

“Simply put, the United States is becoming a more diverse and vibrant nation. From Congress and state legislatures to newsrooms and boardrooms, the challenge for every aspect of American society is to reflect this U.S. population growth with fair and accurate representation of Latinos.”
