Congressman Castro Reflects on Two Years Since the Deadly January 6 Attack on U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement to mark two years since the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol by right-wing insurrectionists:
“Two years ago, Americans watched in horror as right-wing extremists attacked the United States Capitol in a failed but deadly attempt to overthrow democracy and obstruct the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next. It was a grim day that has stained the pages of American history, and I will be forever grateful for the brave Capitol Police officers who fought and died to defend our democracy.
“The investigation conducted by the bipartisan January 6th Committee produced a clear body of evidence that Donald Trump and his associates bear responsibility for the deadly attack on the Capitol. On that dark day, Trump incited a deadly mob and left everyone at the Capitol for dead, including members of his own party who nevertheless continue to repeat his election lies. No one is above the law, and the former president and his co-conspirators must be held accountable. Democracy is fragile, and as Americans it is our moral and civic duty to uphold the Constitution and ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”
