Chairman Castro Leads Subcommittee Hearing on Impact of America’s International Development Priorities
WASHINGTON — The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Development, International Organizations, and Global Corporate Social Impact held its first hearing of the 117th Congress under the leadership of Chairman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) and Ranking Member Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11). The hearing focused on COVID-19’s impact on global development one year after the pandemic began, and how the United States’ international development institutions and workforce must adapt and rebuild in the post-COVID world.
“This pandemic has created new challenges and exposed old weaknesses in America’s capabilities abroad and our infrastructure for supporting international development has been no exception,” said Chairman Castro. “As we work rid the world of COVID, American leadership in supporting international development will be more important than ever, and Congress must fully support that effort. Leading with our values and in partnership with peoples from around the world, we can defeat humanity’s oldest enemies: poverty, hunger, and disease.”
Testifying before the subcommittee were Mr. Rajiv J. Shah, President of the Rockefeller Foundation and Former USAID Administrator, and Ms. Bonnie Glick, Senior Advisor for the Center for Strategic and International Studies and former USAID Deputy Administrator. Both provided crucial testimony as to the state of development around the world one year into the COVID-19 pandemic.
