Castro Statement on Trump’s Decision to Ignore Russia Sanctions

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today released the following statement:

“The President’s decision to hold planned sanctions against Russia for its support for the Assad regime is a harmful foreign policy and national security decision. This sends a message to the world that those who support regimes that use chemical weapons against their own people will not be punished and even invites other rogue leaders to similarly test the resolve of the President of the United States. This is even out of step with his own Administration, which begs the question of why President Trump goes so easy on Russia in the first place.

“The United States should punish Assad and his supporters in Moscow and Tehran for their sanctioned use of chemical weapons and deter them from doing it again through the use of sanctions and diplomacy. I urge President Trump to reverse this decision immediately.”
