Castro Statement on the State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and a member of the House Committees on Education and Labor, tonight made this statement in response to the President’s State of the Union address:

“Despite a brief attempt at striking a bipartisan tone, the President instead painted a picture of division, chaos, and false narratives. He called for increased legal immigration, yet continues to implement policies that seek to curb it. He touted achievements in healthcare, but disregarded his Administration’s attacks on those with pre-existing conditions. He dismissed the American Middle Class, left out any mention of climate change or voting rights, and painted a picture of a foreign policy ungrounded in any common-sense strategy. He labeled the Russia investigation as partisan, but in reality any investigation into subversion of our democracy is both a national security issue and an American issue. Building a career on demonizing groups of people is a dangerous path. Instead, we must continue to stand up to the false narratives put forward by the President and continue driving out fear with hope.”
