Castro Statement on the 75th Anniversary of D-Day

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and a member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, released the following statement today to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day:

“Today, we recognize the fateful day 75 years ago when American troops stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight for the just cause of freedom. The best way to truly honor those who sacrificed their lives in the name of liberty during World War II is to fight tyranny today without fear. Now more than ever, the United States cannot relinquish its standing as the leader of the free world. We must reestablish the fact that our nation is the leader of democracy in a community of nations; a leader in upholding human rights around the world, a leader in supporting our allies.

“Those brave soldiers fought in service to our nation to protect democracy over autocracy, alliances over isolationism, religious freedom over fascism, peaceful protest over oppression. Today, that same self-determination and freedom from fear inform our rich tradition of democratic values. We must always honor those who sacrificed all they had to protect our democracy, and never take it for granted.”
