Castro Statement on Passage of the HEROES Act

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, today released a statement following passage of the HEROES Act in the House of Representatives:

“I voted in support of the Heroes Act today because it delivers urgent relief to match the magnitude of this crisis: 87,000 Americans have lost their lives, 1.5 million are infected, and 36 million are unemployed. This legislation provides much-needed funding for the City of San Antonio and Bexar County that will prevent layoffs and supports our heroes on the frontlines. Moreover, the Heroes Acts will support struggling families with another round of critical stimulus checks for all taxpayers, including 2.4 million hard-working Texans who were wrongly left out in the last round. Protecting essential workers, such as farmworkers and meatpackers, who risk their lives is paramount, and this legislation ensures they get the premium pay and workplace protections they deserve. The Heroes Act also provides money to expand testing capacity and sets in place a national strategic plan, the key to reopening the economy safely and responsibly. This is particularly important for the state of Texas, one of the first states to reopen despite being far behind on testing. I’m confident this legislation will lay the foundation for a faster and more just recovery.”
