CASTRO STATEMENT ON HOUSE BUDGET VOTE

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) today issued the following statement after casting his vote against the House GOP’s budget. The measure passed the Republican-led House of Representatives 228-199.

"The Republican budget that passed in the House of Representatives today is a disservice to the American people. It favors the ultra-wealthy, stifles opportunity, and stacks the deck against hardworking, middle class folks. Instead of strengthening families, the Republican budget takes healthcare away from the millions of Americans who got covered through the Affordable Care Act and cuts critical SNAP funding that more than 46 million Americans rely on to put food on the table each night. We need a forward-thinking budget that invests in our young people, not a measure that freezes Pell Grants and cuts more than $220 billion of education funding. A sound budget should spur economic growth, not hinder our economy by slashing infrastructure and innovation funding. This budget hurts Texas, hurts America, and puts a strain on the very people who most deserve our support.”
