CASTRO STATEMENT ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS WESTERN HEMISPHERE SUBCOMMITTEE'S PASSAGE OF VENEZUELA RESOLUTION

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement after the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee passed H. Res. 851, a bipartisan measure – of which he is an original cosponsor – that calls attention to Venezuela’s current political, economic, social, and humanitarian crises:

“The Venezuelan people are suffering at the hands of their corrupt government. Instead of addressing medicine and food shortages, persistent violence, and an ongoing economic disaster, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro focuses his energy on undermining his nation’s democracy to protect his own political power.

“This resolution denounces Venezuela’s rampant corruption, calls for strengthening the nation’s rule of law, and stresses the need to respect Venezuelans’ basic human rights. I’m hopeful the entire Foreign Affairs Committee and full House of Representatives swiftly take up this resolution to show Congress’ support for the Venezuelan people and to condemn President Maduro’s abuse of his position and disregard for Venezuelans’ wellbeing.”
