Castro Statement on DHS’ Planned Apprehension of Hospitalized 10-Year-Old Girl
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement regarding reports that U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials plan to apprehend a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who recently underwent gall bladder surgery at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas:
“Right now, federal agents are staking out the hospital room of a sick, 10-year-old child. The Trump Administration plans to rip this ailing little girl from her family, and ship her off, by herself, to a detention center. I challenge President Trump and Acting Secretary Duke to show that this enforcement operation is prioritizing a dangerous criminal. A small child who just had surgery is not a threat to Texans’ safety or our national security. DHS should focus its resources elsewhere.”
Congressman Castro recently sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Elaine Duke regarding the agency’s reported repeated failures to adhere to its policies intended to protect individuals at sensitive locations, including hospitals.
