Castro Statement on Anniversary of President Trump’s Decision to End DACA
WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and First Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, today issued the following statement recognizing the one-year anniversary of the Trump Administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“It’s been one year since the Administration ended DACA, putting more than 822,000 recipients in legal limbo. This decision has torn families apart, cost businesses valuable employees, increased fear in communities across our nation, and contradicts the very core values of the United States of America. It has also forced Dreamers to live from court case to court case and in fear of when their time in our shared home will expire. Lawsuits are not a sustainable solution and we cannot allow their futures to be up for negotiation.
“It’s up to Congress now to solve this issue legislatively, but unfortunately we are no closer than we were in 2017. From the DREAM Act and the USA Act, to the bipartisan discharge petition that would have brought several measures to the floor that would protect Dreamers, Republican leadership in the House and Senate has punted every opportunity to fix this self-created crisis. Dreamers are our teachers, our educators, and fellow Americans, and we must continue our fight in Congress to pass legislation that would permanently protect their futures and allow them to continue contributing to our nation’s prosperity.”
