Castro Statement After Vote on Second Re-Introduction of Emergency Declaration Resolution
WASHINGTON--Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, and author of the resolution to terminate the President’s emergency declaration in February, today made the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass the second re-introduction of the same resolution to protect the Constitution against attacks from this Administration:
“Today, my colleagues in the House of Representatives voted to once again terminate the President’s emergency declaration at our border.
“Raiding national security funds to build a wall does nothing to make us safe, nor does it address the real humanitarian crisis across our Southern border. The President has done a disservice to all the service men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect our nation. This money is being stolen from over two dozen states and territories – millions of dollars reserved for important projects that range from training sites for our service members, to the schools for their children, to military readiness projects.
“Our military families are collateral damage in the President’s quest to fulfill a bigoted campaign promise. And it is a shame that he’s trampling on the law and on the rights of Texas land owners.
“We will fight against these attacks on our democracy. We will protect our Constitution and our national interests. And we will never compromise our duty, first and foremost, to the American people.”
