CASTRO CONGRATULATES YOUNG WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP ACADEMY ON NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL DESIGNATION

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) today released the following statement after the Department of Education recognized the Young Women's Leadership Academy (YWLA) in San Antonio as a National Blue Ribbon School:

"I could not be prouder of the teachers, students, and administrators at YWLA for earning this impressive and deserved distinction. The school's commitment to excellence shines through the young women enrolled there and all of their varied accomplishments. YWLA's focus on science, math, and technology equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the evolving global economy. The emphasis on STEM coursework at YWLA is particularly significant and commendable given women's underrepresentation in those critically important fields. Graduates from YWLA are not only college-ready, they are poised to be leaders in whichever career they choose to pursue. I applaud the entire YWLA community and the example they set for schools across the United States."

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. Only 335 public and private schools across the country received this selective honor for 2015.
