Congressman Joaquin Castro

Representing the 20th District of Texas

Rep. Castro discusses Government shutdown on "All in with Chris Hayes"

Oct 17, 2013

After sixteen long days for the 140,000 furloughed Texans and the thousands of Americans affected by the government shutdown, the Senate and the House finally voted to fund the government, get folks back to work, and pay our nation's bills. In the past couple of weeks, the American economy lost $24 billion before partisan politics were put aside. Today's vote proves that when Congress puts the American people first, Republicans and Democrats can work together and get things done.

In my first couple of months in Congress, with the passage of the Violence Against Women Act and the Hurricane Sandy Aid Act, I was witness to the great things that can be accomplished when Congress works together. I am hopeful that in the next couple of months Congress will again put the will of the people ahead of partisan politics, lift our economy, and gain back the trust of the American people.
