CHC Chairman Castro Response to President Trump's "Immigration Plan"

May 17, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s proposed plan to address immigration in the United States:

“I’m glad the White House is finally engaging Congress on the issue of immigration. Unfortunately, the President’s proposal betrays American values. President Trump – the most anti-immigrant and xenophobic President in generations – hopes to use the concept of ‘merit’ to keep out of this country people that Stephen Miller doesn’t like.

“Our country was built in large part by people who came here with nothing and risked everything to build a better life for their families. In doing so, together we built the strongest, most prosperous, and powerful nation on Earth. We did not cherry-pick our way to greatness. Besides, who gets to define ‘merit?’ Few among us could work on a roof in the July Texas sun, or work the fields of the Central Valley or Midwest for eight hours a day. That seems like a ‘highly skilled’ worker to me.

“The President’s plan also leaves out any solution for the humanitarian situation at the border, ignores DACA and TPS-holders, and many other important immigration-related concerns. We, in Congress, are working on necessary reforms, including the Dream and Promise Act, a bill to address the stability of the Northern Triangle, and Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus will not accept this President’s proposal or be deterred by his xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda.”
