Castro Statement on Equal Pay Day

Apr 2, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and a member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, released the following statement today in observance of Equal Pay Day:

“On Equal Pay Day, we’re reminded of how far we have come in the fight for equity, but also how far we need to go to achieve true equality. At the rate the pay gap is currently closing, women will not achieve pay equity with men until 2106. This is not only morally reprehensible, but economically short-sighted. Women are equal to men in every feasible way and deserve to be valued and recognized as such in the workplace and on their paychecks. I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which strengthens loopholes in the 1963 Equal Pay Act by providing effective remedies for women who are not being paid equal pay for equal work, that overwhelmingly passed the House last week. Our country, our economy and the world will be stronger when women are fully empowered and supported under the law. This legislation – championed by Democrats in the House – brings us one step closer to bridging that divide.”
