At the end of last year, Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), our country’s national education law. Today I hosted a listening session with San Antonio superintendents and local education stakeholders about ESSA and how the legislation will affect our city’s schools. I’m grateful to U.S.
On Memorial Day, I joined Edgewood Independent School District for a ceremony honoring San Antonio’s veterans and fallen heroes.
While in Vietnam, Senator Tom Carper (a Vietnam veteran himself), Congressman Beto O'Rourke, and I honored the brave Americans who served in the conflict there. In Hanoi, we paid our respects to the prisoners of war, like Senator John McCain, who were held captive at the Hỏa Lò Prison. The day after our tour of the “Hanoi Hilton,” we visited the American Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City.
Congratulations to the Texas A&M University-San Antonio class of 2016! It was an honor to be your commencement speaker.
Germany has been a valuable and reliable ally to the United States as we’ve sought to make the world a safer, freer place. The strength of our partnership will help our nations as we address the ongoing refugee crisis and work to dismantle terrorist networks.
Today I met with members of the 70th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Wing, which has a unit in San Antonio. It was great to hear about their work, thank them for their service, and congratulate the 70th ISR Wing's Airman of the Year for 2015, Senior Airman Perez.
Congratulations to Edgewood Independent School District high schooler Mikala Gil who won the 20th District's Congressional Art Competition, and thank you to all the talented San Antonio students who submitted their work!
I joined my colleagues and wore green today to support Mental Health Awareness month. Encouraging conversations about mental health will help us end stigmas around the issue and improve access to care. Already, millions of families have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act moving our nation closer to mental and physical health parity when it comes to insurance and coverage.
I met with some admirable U.S. Army War College students today and discussed my work on the Armed Services Committee. It was great to hear about all they're learning and thank them for their service.
Yesterday evening I attended an event with ambassadors from Japan and South Korea and legislators from their respective nations. As co-chair of the U.S.-Japan Caucus, I am committed not only to strengthening America’s relationship with Japan, but also to engaging our other allies and partners in Asia to promote regional security and prosperity.
